The tradition of Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade dates back to 1924, making it the second oldest Thanksgiving day parade in the whole country, only after the 6abc Dunkin’ Donuts Thanksgiving day parade of Philadephia which started in the year 1920.
Due to the risk of the global pandemic COVID-19, in 2020 Macy’s Thanksgiving day parade did not follow the conventional proceedings. That year, the parade was closed to the public and the event was filmed at Herald Square as a broadcast event only. The overall parade was also downsized owing to the situation.
The following year, in 2021, the parade took place with all its glory as the risk of the pandemic had started to decrease. It followed the traditional in-person procession which included around 65,000 participants and almost 2,5 million spectators. The number of spectators is expected to be around 3 million this year.
