Kim Kardashian spoke out that she has been quiet for the past few days not because she hasn’t been disgusted and outraged by the recent Balenciaga campaigns, but because she wanted an opportunity to speak to their team to understand for herself how this could have happened.
The brand was in severe controversy and facing widespread hatred due to the ad campaigns containing children wearing costumes holding BDSM-suggestive teddy bears.
She propagated that she as a mother of four has been shaken by the disturbing images and that the safety of children must be held with the highest regard and that any attempts to normalize any form of child abuse have no place in our culture.
She shared her happiness about the ads being removed. She hinted that she would not be removed as the face of the company. And that she would wait to witness the seriousness of culpability that Balenciaga would have to endure on their upcoming journey.
Kim Kardashian on her verified Instagram account story wrote that “I appreciate Balenciaga’s removal of the campaigns and apology. In speaking with them, I believe they will understand the seriousness of the issue and will take the necessary measures for this to never happen again”.
In addition to this she wrote that as for her future with Balenciaga, she is currently re-evaluating her relationship with the brand, basing it off their willingness to accept accountability for something that should have never happened to begin with and the actions she is expecting to see them take to protect children. The same response appeared on her official Twitter account as well.
Kim Kardashian starred in the campaign of Fall/Winter 2022 and ever since is a follower of the Spanish brand. She was one among many other celebrities to appear at the runway at Balenciaga’s 51st Couture Collection show. She was featured wearing a skin-fit black dress with gloves and a plunging neckline.
Balenciaga released photos last week featuring two girls holding plushies with BDSM-suggestive leather harnesses. In the following analysis, critics found a Balenciaga bag on a piece of furniture along with a copy of the ‘Ashcroft vs Free Speech Coalition’ case.
There was also another photo of a woman, a redhead, seated on a desk with a book by Michael Boerrman, displaying inappropriate images of children. It had a backdrop of New York City.
Lila Rose, activist and the founder of the anti-abortion organization Live Action, criticized by tweeting that the campaign is absolutely disgusting and tagged Kim Kardashian in her tweet and urged her to speak up.
Balenciaga issued an apology on their social media handle which said that they sincerely apologize for any offense their holiday campaign may have caused; the plush bear bags by them should not have been featured with children in this campaign. And that they have immediately removed the campaign from all platforms.
It continued that they apologize for displaying unsettling documents in their campaign and they are taking this matter very seriously and are taking legal action against the parties responsible for creating the set and including unapproved items for the Spring 23 campaign photoshoot. The brand further commented that they stand against abuse of children in any form. The well–being and safety of children are what they care for.
Gabriele Galimberti, the photographer of the campaign posted a long statement on his Instagram account trying to save his face from the decisions of the creative and styling team. A part of his statement said that he is not in a position to comment on Balenciaga’s choices, but it must be stressed that he was not entitled to choose neither the products nor the models nor the mix of the same.
He further wrote that as a photographer, he was only and solely requested to lit the given scene, and take the shots according to his established signature style. As usual for commercial shooting, the direction of the campaign and the choice of the objects displayed are not in the hands of the photographer and thus was his case too according to him.
He said that he has no connection with the photo where a Supreme Court document appears. And, that one was taken in another set by other people and was falsely associated with my photos.
The photos by Gabriele Galimberti were published as part of a project named “Toy Stories”.
Demna, Creative Director of the brand had signed up for the association of Nicole Kidman, Dua Lipa, Naomi Campbell, Bella Hadid, and “Selling Sunset” star Christine Quinn to launch Balenciaga’s second couture collection.
Jenner, Anna Wintour, Emily Ratajkowski, Tracee Ellis Ross, Offset, Luka Sabbat, and celebrity stylist Law Roach and the daughter of Kim were seated in the front row of the show.
Ye, known earlier as Kanye West, was associated with the brand. Following his antisemitic views and comments, the brand’s parent company, Kering, announced the breaking off of all ties with him.
