When you think of a delivery rider bringing your order to your door, a lady isn’t the typical image you’d have or expect when you open your door. With Jumia Food, Kabarihira Barbara is changing this narrative.

Kabarihira Barbara, a 23-year-old student at Makerere University, is breaking down stereotypes about who can be your delivery rider in Uganda.

Kabarihira Barbara began working as a delivery rider for Jumia Food in June 2019, after making the decision to use her motorcycle for money.

“I had a bike at the time so I decided to look for a way I could use it to make money not just for fun. I went online to look for companies that make deliveries, Jumia popped up & the rest is history,”

Barbara says

Barbara then went to the offices of Jumia Food where she was educated & hired to become a delivery rider

As in all jobs, she faces a fair share of challenges. Delivery in rainy seasons can be difficult and without proper mapping, finding customer locations can prove difficult.

But that doesn’t get in her way.

“This job has flexible hours so I have time for school & it has helped provide money for my expenses like rent & tuition,”

she added

But it’s not just the money that’s been taken away from this job. Barbara says it helped her to become a better rider and gave her a chance to meet new and interesting people along the way.

She urges young people to branch out into fields like this to make money.

“Sometimes getting an office job might be difficult; so I urge guys to take up opportunities like this to make a living,”

Barbara adds

Unlike other companies that are hesitant to hire women to do the so-called men’s jobs, Jumia Uganda is not like that because it employs people like Kabarihira Barbara.
