Cheptegei , 25, will be vying for the prestigious honour for a third time after winning silver in the 10000m event and gold in 5000m at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.

As a result of Cheptegei’s two medals and Peruth Chemutai’s win in the 3000m steeplechase, as well as Jacob Kiplimo’s bronze in the 10000m, Uganda had its best-ever performance in the Olympics.

Cheptemei will compete with nine other Olympic champions for the 2021 Male Athlete of the Year Award, including marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge and shot-put champion Ryan Crouser, who has gone undefeated all year.

Mondo Duplantis, the pole vaulting ace from Sweden, and Karsten Warholm, the 400m hurdles world record holder from Norway, are also nominees.

The World Athletics Council and the World Athletics Family will cast their votes by email, while fans will be able to cast their votes online through Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

“The World Athletics Council will vote 50%, the World Athletics Family will vote 25%, and the public will vote 25%,” stated World Athletics in its statement.

“50 per cent of the vote will come from the World Athletics Council, while 25 per cent of the vote will come from the World Athletics Family and 25 per cent from the public,” read World Athletics’ statement.
