‘I’m not necessarily retiring’ – Serena Williams feels different about her decision to retire after searing US Open first-round victory

Serena Williams still has a lot of tennis in it. However, she will unfortunately leave professional tennis after the U.S. Open. She faced Danka Kovinic in the first round of the tournament and won the match comfortably. The game looked like vintage Serena as the score was 6-3, 6-3 at the end.

During the post-match press conference, Serena was asked why she prefers the term “evolution” to “retirement”. To this, the 23-time Grand Slam winner replied: “I prefer the word evolution because I feel like I’m at a stage in my life where I’m not necessarily retiring. I just evolve from tennis.

She was also asked if her feelings about retirement have changed since she made the announcement. To everyone’s surprise, Serena admitted that her feelings had since changed. Moreover, she says,I feel different. I think I was very emotional in Toronto and Cincinnati and it was very difficult.

Serena Williams skeptical but confident about the evolution of tennis

Serena felt she was rusty at the time of the Canadian Open and the Cincinnati Masters and was sure of her retirement. However, she looked very in touch in the first round of the US Open and is picking up her pace with each tournament.

She says, “I’m not saying it’s not difficult now. It’s still extremely difficult because I love being there. And the more tournaments I play, the more I feel like I belong and that’s a hard feeling to have. And to uh walk away knowing that the more you do, the brighter you can shine.

However, Serena is still confident in her decision that it’s time for her to move on. Moreover, she says, “It’s time for me, you know, to move on to the next thing. I think it’s important because there are so many other things I want to do. She wants to do a lot more things outside of tennis, like spending time with her family and managing her business.
