Denis Awillo Omara Shot and Killed 4 People in Ganda, Nansana Shooting

Police have clarified that the commander Denis Awillo Omara who shot four people, including two civilians and officers in Nansana, was under the influence of alcohol .

On Monday, January 11, 2021, a local corporal identified as Denis Awillo Omara reportedly shot and killed four people in Ganda, Nansana, before he was also killed in a defensive operation. The dead included two local security personnel, a civilian and a police constable.

However, in a statement dated January 11, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesman Patrick Onyango condemned the outrageous act and expressed his true condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones. Onyango said they immediately investigated and established that the suspect was acting under the influence of alcohol.

“Today, we registered unfortunate incident in Ganda Nansana in Wakiso District where five people lost their lives and three were injured in a shooting incident. On the 11/01/2021 at about 0900 hours, police received information on shooting incident at Ganda village Kyebando Parish, Wakiso District.”

”According to available information, L/CPL Denis Omara, an LDU Commander, attached to Ganda detach, who is suspected to have been under the influence of alcohol, shot dead four people namely Special Police Constable Isaac Nimulungi, LDUs.”

The deceased include; Special Police Constable Isaac Nimulungi, LDUs No. AX301784 Abraham Masereka, No. AX017516 John Wafula and a civilian woman Rita Nabayingo, a resident of Nsumbi village Kyebando parish, Wakiso District.

Onyango added that Denis Awillo Omara fired 18 bullets, injuring several locals, but was shot dead by security officers while trying to bring the situation back to normal.

“Denis Willy Omara was later put out of action. Police Constable David Ochen was injured. Two other civilians yet to be identified were also injured and rushed to unknown clinics. Bodies were taken to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem . The suspect fired 18 bullets.” Onyango added.

This comes at a time when the Ugandan People’s Defense Force (UPDF)  has already apologized following a similar incident.

“We apologise for whatever happened. We pray for mercy from you. It was not in the plan of the UPDF for such a thing to happen. We don’t train soldiers to kill but rather to protect people and their property.”Maj. Gen. Sam Kawagga, commander of the First Division, told locals in Nansana immediately after the horrific incident.

He assured that further investigations would be carried out to establish the facts about the motive of the random shooting officer in Nansana.

“The motive for the shooting is not yet known. The non-commissioned officer (NCO) investigating the incident is beginning to know what prompted his colleagues to shoot. More details about the incident will be made available to the public as soon as we find them.”
