The 32-year-old British actor, whose career rose to international fame after receiving the award for his performance in Jordan Peele’s Get Out , was the heavy favourite for the top award, having previously taken the best actor award at the Golden Globes and the Baftas.

In his acceptance speech, Kaluuya first thanked God – “We cannot be here without your guidance and protection”, before thanking his mother (who “set the factory settings for me to perform.”) and offering praise for the character he played, Fred Hampton.

During his acceptance speech, Kaluuya commended his mother and the man he played, Fred Hampton: “What a man, how blessed we are to live in a lifetime where he existed.” When the American empire played divide and conquer, we declare unite and ascend.

Also, he added: “I am grateful for you showing me myself, and there is so much work to be done — everyone in the room must do it. This isn’t an individual project. It takes all of us together. We have work to do.”

The film, directed by Shaka King, tells the story of the betrayal of leading Chicago Black Panther Fred Hampton by FBI informant William O’Neal (Lakeith Stanfield, a previous Best Supporting Actor Award nominee) in the late 1960s.
