The Recording Academy has announced the details for the premiere ceremony ahead of the airing of the annual Grammy Awards this month.
Ahead of the 2021 Grammy Awards, the 63rd Grammy Awards premiere will take place on Sunday, March 14, and will be broadcast live internationally via Grammy.com.
Hosted by current three-time Grammy nominee Jhene Aiko, the premiere will feature performances by Nigerian singer, songwriter and rapper Burna Boy, singer and composer Rufus Wainwright, Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, Igor Levitt, Lido Pimienta, Poppy, and a number of current Grammy nominees.
The premiere festival is part of the events that make up Grammy Week 2021, which the recording academy says “celebrates the nominees this year and the music that unites us.”
The Grammys were presented by the Recording Academy and first held in 1959 to commemorate ‘artistic success, technical expertise and overall excellence in recording, without regard to album sales or charts.’
Originally scheduled for January 31st, the 63rd Grammys was postponed to March 14th because of the “worsening Coronavirus situation in Los Angeles“. In addition, almost all of the events that make up this year’s Grammys week will be virtual events as a result of the global pandemic.
Burna Boy will try to pick up his first Grammy after being nominated for the second time in a row for his 2020 LP Twice As Tall. The Afro-Fusion singer was nominated for Best Global Music Album , formerly known as Best World Music Album.
He was shortlisted in conjunction with Tinariwen, the Grammy-winning Tuareg group, Antibalas, the Brooklyn-based Afrobeat band, Bebel Gilberto and Anoushka Sankar, the British Indian sitar player and composer.
Meanwhile, other activities during this year’s Grammy Week from March 8 to 14 include a Grammy at the Schools Festival, Women in the Mix, an inaugural Black Music collective Grammy Week celebration and a Grammy U Master Class with Tayla Parx.
The Producers and Engineers Division concludes the event with the 20th Anniversary Celebration, 23rd Annual Entertainment Legal Initiative and Musicares Music at a Mission Event.
The 2021 Grammys will take place at the Staples Center with South African comedian Trevor Noah as host . This year Beyoncé leads the nominations with nine nods, then six each with Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift and Roddy Ricch.
