The African Football Federation on Tuesday decided that the final of the Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held in Cameroon next January, has been postponed for one year and will now be held in 2022.

  • The 2021 Africa Cup to be held in Cameroon in January
  • Organizers have postponed the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations
  • The final of the Africa Cup of Nations postponed for one year
  • The reason for the postponement indicates the prevalence of coronavirus infection
  • AFCON 2022 to play in the same year at the next World Cup in Qatar

Organizers have postponed the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Cameroon in January and February next year, and are now expected to play in January and February 2022.

With the 2020/21 campaign unaffected, the club could be sighing for another 12 months now, as the club is in danger of losing key players next season.

Liverpool has been badly affected since Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Nabi Geeta could have been without him for weeks at a crucial time of this season. Other top Premier League players such as Riyad Mahrez, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang Nicolas Pepe , Eric Bailey, Wilfried Zaha and Wilfried Bony are also invited and may be part of the next season.

The clash with the European club season has been a long-standing issue for AFCON tournaments, so the 2019 edition played against it in the summer.

Similarly, it was originally planned for 2021 (now 2022), and it returned to its previous January / February location only in unfavourable weather conditions in Cameroon in June and July.

Cameroon’s summer rainy season ensures that the June / July matches are not possible.

The reason for the postponement indicates the prevalence of coronavirus infection on the eligibility table. The qualifying rounds were to end in September, but all three rounds were missed as a result of the suspension of all international football.

One of the implications of moving AFCON to 2022 is that it will now play in the same year at the next World Cup in Qatar. However, the World Cup will be held in November and December, meaning the matches will be in separate seasons.

Which country will host Afcon 2021?

Cameroon will be hosting the tournament. Originally the tournament was scheduled to take place in June and July 2021 but on 15 January 2020, the CAF announced that it would take place between 9 January and 6 February 2021 because of adverse climate conditions during that period.

Which country has won the most African cup of Nation?

Egypt has won 7 times the tournament, 2 more than Cameroon’s next best. In 14 countries, 10 of the past winners will take part in the 2019 tournament and won the African Cup of Nations. Zambia was the last winner in 2012.
